Actions for Change

A school-wide Actions for Change project kicks off in February. Connected with the Science and Social Studies curriculums from Kindergarten to Grade 6, this project addresses scientific and environmental issues dealing with climate change and global warming. At each grade level, students will be challenged to use their critical and creative thinking skills to explore these real world problems.  Students will be encouraged to realize that every person is significant – each with the inherent power to impact the environment, both positively and detrimentally, through their actions. Our hope is that children will develop social awareness while exploring issues affecting their own environment and be empowered to be leaders and make positive choices in their daily lives.

A grant from BP Energy has enabled to the school to bring in four inquiry-based learning specialists from Evergreen Theatre Company the week of February 11 to 15 to conduct a school-wide theatre residency program focusing on environment issues and energy conservation. The theatre residency will culminate with a performance the afternoon of Friday, February 15.

Children and families are invited to lower their thermostats and put on a favorite sweater. Join Canadians across the country fighting climate change by conserving energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. If every Canadian lowered the heat by just 2º C this winter, it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4 Megatons. So lower the heat, wear a sweater indoors and make the world a better place.

Community Service Projects

In the month of December students are invited to bring donations of new or next-to-new hats, mittens, gloves and scarves to decorate the Christmas tree in the office. The winter clothing will be donated to a charity for people in need at the end of the month.

Each December Baturyn School undertakes an annual school-wide service project where all students create and distribute seasonal greeting cards for people in the community. Students make cards in their art classes, and each class goes on a walking fieldtrip to distribute the hand-made cards to homes in the area. Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On behalf of the staff at Baturyn School, it is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to all students and their families.

Baturyn School is a positive, nurturing learning community focused on the success  of all students. Our staff is committed to providing rich learning experiences and the best possible programming to enable all students to learn, grow and achieve. High standards for academic success and positive student behavior are emphasized at Baturyn.

The education of our children is a partnership between home, school and the child. For students to be successful in their learning, all members of the partnership must work together. Parents are an integral part of the learning team and a key element in the success of children in school. We welcome parent involvement.  With parental participation and support, the very best learning experiences are created for children.

Schools, like homes, rely on communication to establish and maintain relationships. Our school handbook provides  information about our school programs, activities, policies, and procedures. A school newsletter is sent home with the oldest child in the family on the last Friday of each month. We also encourage families to utilize Schoolzone, a secure on-line tool desined to provide Baturyn parents and students with information about school events, activities and much more.

We look forward to working with you to provide the very best learning experiences for our students.

Karen Brown  M.Ed
Principal
